Kimo and Shannon Kanekoa

Meet the Kanekoa Ohana, and return to the mainland with family in Hawaii.

Kimo and Shannon Kanekoa, the owners of Hawaiian Traditions Tours, and your gracious and personable tour hosts, both come from strong LDS roots. Expressing her love for the church, Shannon quotes Joseph F. Smith after serving his first mission in Hawaii. "We are Mormon, true-blue, through and through."

Both Kimo and Shannon have progenitors who joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as early as the 1830's through the 1860's. They met while attending The Church College of Hawaii, now known as Brigham Young University-Hawaii Campus. After a romantic courtship under the coconut palms, they fell in love and were married in the Laie Hawaii Temple in 1970. They raised their 5 sons in Reno, Nevada before returning home to Hawaii, where they now live in the Hawaiian Homes, native families subdivision in Lahaina.

Church History

Kimo and Shannon share a life-long fascination for genealogy and family history, this interest led them to research their families and the fascinating history of the Hawaiian islands, delving into the study of the Kanekoa and Moiha families lines from which Kimo is descended. This lead them naturally to their business Hawaiian Traditions Tours, where they specialize in LDS Church History in the Hawaiian Islands.

"Kimo and I enjoy meeting people who share our interest in church history. As a retired school teacher, I love sharing the knowledge we have gained over the years and Kimo loves sharing the cultural ways of his gracious and loving Hawaiian people. He adds to this his passion for playing Hawaiian music on his ukulele, and his easygoing Aloha. Our clients are thrilled to have such an educational and authentic experience."
- Shannon Kanekoa

Currently Kimo and Shannon serve as Ward Missionaries in the Lahaina 1st Ward. Shannon also serves as a Family History Consultant and Substitute Primary Teacher. Kimo is in the process of retiring from his career as a geological expert in the mining industry of Nevada.
